Don’t rush the process – remembering her first job could lead to a long story about people she worked with, places she went to, achievements and disappointments. Let her reminisce, and don’t be in a hurry to move on to the next topic. The book could take many, many hours to put together, but it will provide many more hours of pleasure, both in its creation and after.

Memory box

Use a storage box or an old shoebox. Decorate the outside to make it look special and then fill it with items that will act as memory prompts. These could be items with personal significance, such as medals, a wedding memento, an old tobacco tin, a letter or theatre ticket, or they could be more general things that will spark memories of an earlier time, for example old magazines or newspapers, food packaging and tins, cooking utensils, coronation or royal wedding china, and so on. Wartime items such as ration books and gas masks can prompt many a story. Again, you can add to the box over time. Ask friends and other family members to come up with items they think might be useful.

It may be a good idea to set aside a specific time each week for reminiscing with your loved one. You’ll soon be able to judge the appropriate length of time to spend on the activity, but let her go at her own pace, and be sensitive to when she starts to tire or to lose interest.
